Total production of pistol-carbines is estimated to be approximately 300 or less guns. They were originally advertised as "Detached Breech Rifle Carbines." This example has a barrel shortened to 15 1/2 inches as original length would have been 16 1/2 inches, an integral spring loaded magazine, and crowned muzzle and is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB.14.1854" (faint) on the top flat. Pinched front sight and incorrect style fixed notch period replacement rear sight on the plain brass receiver. The barrel and magazine were blued. Both grip panels and lever are numbered to the gun. Includes a replacement walnut attachable stock (doesn’t fit correctly) featuring a crescent silver plated brass buttplate. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
