Description:

This field type gun shows some similarities to the so-called "Woodruff Guns" employed by a few western cavalry units during the Civil War. The only visible markings are an "LP" monogram on the right trunnion and "No 118" on the left. Mounted on a wooden carriage with iron fittings. Approximate measurements: 2 1/4" bore diameter, 47" barrel length, 80" carriage length, 50" carriage wheelbase, 40 1/2" wheel diameter. Includes a wooden crate with a plaque marked "CAPT. E. BIGWOOD/1ST IND. LT. ARTILLERY" on the lid as well as a plethora of accessories related to loading, firing and transporting this cannon. This grouping of accessories include the cleaning rod, ramrod, rod with worm, cannon moving wooden implement, capper, pick, bore brush, powder measure, double cavity ball mold by C. Palmer and funnel. It is not often that we catalog a cannon with so many accessories. Very good, retains most of the black enamel finish with some scattered oxidation and brown patina, more prevalent on the carriage fittings. The accessories are generally fine or better.
