Model 1816 Type III Flintlock manufactured by D. Nippes. Nippes manufactured approximately 1600 Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Muskets in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania from 1837-1840. The musket is in original flintlock configuration with the barrel and triggerguard, 'National Armory Bright', the lock is case-hardened and the stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock is dated "1838" vertically behind the hammer and marked "US / D. NIPPES / PHILA" in below the flash pan. The barrel tang is dated "1839". The left side of the barrel is stamped "US" / LF / P". The script cartouche is stamped in an oval on the left stock flat. The musket has the characteristic Model 1816 low comb stock and ball-shaped sling swivel reinforcement on the trigger guard. "15" marked on the buttstock and "US" on the buttplate tang. Most Model 1816 Flintlock muskets were converted to percussion and original flintlock examples are scarce. With 16 inch long bayonet marked "US / EB" on the blade and "G/b." flanked by "16" and "45" on the socket.
About good with the metal surfaces having been cleaned bright and are now beginning to age again with some minor spotting. There is some mild flash pitting. The stock is good with some minor dings, dents and scratches, with a few minor gouges. The markings are clear. The bayonet is good with some minor dings along the edges and exhibiting a smooth yellow patina.
