Description:

This is a very rare example of a fine quality massive Indian percussion camel gun manufactured c.1840-50. The gun has a rifled, octagon barrel with Damascus finish and traces of gold-washed decorations. The breech is fitted with a massive rear sight with seven sight apertures. The barrel is secured to the stock by seven narrow iron bands. The lock is English made and has a flat flush-mounted lock plate, conventional English style hammer with knurled spur and bolster with raised decorative fence. The lock plate, hammer and bolster are decorated with extremely well-executed English scroll engraving and double-line borders. The left stock flat has an English style side plate screw. The iron English style trigger guard is engraved with tight English scrollwork and the front finial is a typical English pineapple design. The stock has a Indian or Middle Eastern style butt and is fitted with two ling swivels and a heavy leather sling. The gun was probably a military trophy and weighs 30 pounds. Writer cannot recall ever seeing this configuration of gun. Usually when they are this massive, they have a pintle device for mounting on a wall or ship whereas, this weapon was made as a shoulder weapon!

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel, lock and iron furniture have a silver-gray patina. Metal surfaces are generally smooth and free from pitting. The engraving on the lock, hammer and trigger guard is crisp. The gun has no visible markings. The stock is in very good overall condition but a four-inch portion of the right side of the forearm is missing.
