Manufactured in 1880, this First Model has the distinctive dust cover with checkered oval thumbrest fitted in guide grooves on the top of the frame rather than a center rail as in the later models. It features blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights with a barrel stamped with the two line address/patent dates marking on the top. The upper tang is stamped "MODEL 1873." Full length magazine, smooth forearm with cap and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).
Fair. The rifle has primarily an aged gray patina overall with some traces of finish remaining. The magazine tube, lever, and buttplate are a brown patina. The elevator has an golden yellow patina. There are some overall light scratches, marks, and dings with some areas of oxidation and light pitting. The markings are crisp and clear. The contrasting forearm and stock are also fair with various dings, dents, scratches, and chips. Mechanically fine.
