Produced by an unknown smith, the hilt and scabbard conform to the 1841 regulations, the first U.S. Navy sword design to come with an illustration of what the sword was supposed to look like, while the blade appears to be an item from the looser 1813 regulations, which merely called for a vaguely defined "cut and thrust sword, yellow mounted"; possibly from a veteran officer who chose to have his original sword remounted in the 1840's instead of discarding the weapon. Measuring 33 3/4 inches overall, with a 28 1/8 inch lightly curved single fuller blade, decorated with a three-sided 17 1/2 inch niter blue field, terminating with a scroll flourish and bearing gold washed scroll patterns, an American eagle, and a fouled anchor. The hilt is gilt brass, with oak leaf decorations, dual folding counter-guards, floral accents on the quillions and knuckle guard, scale pattern antique ivory grip and a screaming eagle pommel. With a black leather scabbard, showing a ring of 12 stars around the frog stud, a fouled anchor on the mid band, and an oak branch on the tip.

Fine. The blade shows patches of pitting, concentrated along the edges and spine, with 75% of the original blue and gold finish and a few light handling marks. The counter-guards are stuck in the folded position, a small crack is present in the knuckle guard, and the well-aged grip shows some mild cracks and chips, otherwise the hilt is very good with aged brass visible on the high points and mild handling marks. The scabbard is fair, with some lost stitching, mild cracks and scuffs, and some dents on the hardware.
