Manufactured in 1888. The included factory letter confirms the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, barrel length, and plain trigger. The rifle was received in the warehouse on May 09, 1888 and shipped on July 17, 1888, order number 9909. The top barrel flat is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "40-65 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-" and the two-line two-patent dates are marked on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number at the end. German silver blade front sight and adjustable buck horn rear sporting sight. Blue barrel and full length magazine, with casehardened frame and remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with iron forend cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Good. The barrel has retain traces of the original blue finish with a smooth dark patina with scattered traces of thin original blue finish. The magazine tube has thinned to form a mottled brown patina and shows some discoloration and a couple of minor dings. The markings are legible. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray and silver gray patina. The wood is fair with some scattered dings, sling swivel stud hole with wood filler, and a scratch with a few bruises of the left side of the stock. Mechanically excellent.
