Description:

This is a fine example of a late production Winchester second model 1866 rifle as manufactured in 1869, with the flared frame at the forearm and the serial number, "20592", stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. The 24-inch full octagon barrel has the first style, two-line legend of: "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT. 16.1860/KING'S-PATENT MARCH 29. 1866" ahead of the rear sight and it is fitted with a full length magazine. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with a nickel silver blade with a folding first type sporting leaf rear sight with the round top and the coil spring in the base. The forearm has the early style brass tip with screw that passes through the extreme lower part of the barrel. The forearm tip is fitted with a factory sling swivel and so is the buttstock. The brass receiver has the indented style loading gate with one retaining screw. The upper tang has a single stock screw. The brass buttplate has a sharply pointed heel with hinged butt trap door and inside the stock is 1-piece of the 3-piece cleaning rod. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The barrel and magazine are blued and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with an untouched dark brown patina overall. The receiver and side plates are all in very fine condition showing a dull flat patina color overall, with the same matching patina on the forend cap. The stock and forend are both in fine condition with wear and handling marks overall, some shrinkage and age cracks on the left front side of the buttstock, below the tang. Mechanically fine. A very nice, Early Production Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle.
