Manufactured in 1879, this late First Model 1873 Winchester falls near the end of the 1600-31000 serial range and has the mortised dust cover guide rails and dust cover with integral checkered thumb piece. It is equipped with German silver blade front and elevation adjustable sporting rear sights, a smooth straight wrist stock and forearm, and crescent buttplate with compartment. The barrel is marked with the two line address and King's Improvement patent information and the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" in script. The lower tang is marked with the serial number behind the barrel latch.
Fine. The action retains nearly 60% of the original blue while the barrel and magazine tube display 20% faded blue finish with a soft gray-brown patina. The hammer and lever retain faded original case colors. There is some spotting/oxidation and brighter edge wear throughout. The wood is very good with a hairline crack running from the top tang back to the center of buttplate, minor scratches and some small dings. Mechanically fine. The markings are crisp throughout. The First Model 1873s are quite scarce compared to the later production Models.
