Manufactured in 1883, this is a Third Model carbine with the dust cover guide rail built into the receiver and serrated edges at the back of the dust cover. It has a blade front sight on a stud, folding ladder rear sight, smooth musket style forearm and straight wrist stock, and a steel carbine buttplate. The top of the barrel is marked: "WINCHESTER'S- REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT/- KING'S- IMPROVEMENT- PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight . The upper tang is marked "{MODEL. 1876.}" and has been tapped for mounting a peep sight. The serial number is on the rear of the lower tang. It has a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver.
Fair. The rifle has primarily a brown patina with patches of pitting and oxidation. The wood is fair with a long crack visible on half the length of the comb on the right side and various dings and scrapes. The action is fine, and the visible markings are all crisp.
