Description:

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured in 1866. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate with blued 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include: (1) straight back, nickel silver, front sight blade, (2) large brass magazine follower, (3) beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver, (4) second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel and (5) second style receiver without a rear sight dovetail. The rifle has an early pattern folding leaf rear sight with rounded leaf, "1000" stamped below the center notch and "100" marking on the leaf base. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and loop were standard features on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door, and the butt trap contains the four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip supplied with late production Henry rifles. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000. This legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." is located on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrel and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is stamped with the serial number "11826" between the rear sight and the receiver. "11826" was also stamped on the inside of the buttplate, on the left side of the lower tang and on the bottom of the upper stock inlet. All of the visible serial numbers match. Buttplate and stock screws on late production Henry rifles are not serial numbered. The small "H" inspection mark used by B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and rear sight have an artificial brown patina with extensive pitting on some surfaces. The New Haven Arms legend and serial number are crisp. The early pattern rear sight is a period replacement. The brass receiver and buttplate have evidence of polishing out dents and aging brass to be consistent in color. There are a number of small dents along the edges of the side plates and adjacent areas of the receiver and some dents and vice marks on the top of the receiver along the edges of the hammer well. The hammer and lever screws may be period replacements. The hammer is heavily pitted and the lever has fine pitting. Both the hammer and lever have a gray brown patina. The buttplate has some scattered patches of age discoloration. The revarnished replacement stock is in fair condition with a few minor dents and scratches. The stock has some shrinkage at the junction with the receiver and upper tang. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle used in the Civil War. The fire power of a repeating rifle with 15-shot magazine made the Henry rifle popular on the frontier following the Civil War. Most Henry rifles exhibit the wear associated with daily use in a harsh environment. This is a good example of an important and historically significant rifle.
