Late production Henry lever action rifle manufactured in 1866 and serial numbered in the Winchester Model 1866 serial number range. The receiver has the same round top and rounded upper edges as the Model 1866. A similar Henry rifle receiver is illustrated and described on page 51 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate with 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include, straight back, nickel silver, front sight blade, beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver and second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The rifle has a folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and hook loop were standard on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000. This legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." is located on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrel and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is stamped with the serial number "14338" between the rear sight and the receiver. "14338" is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate, on the left side of the lower tang (under stock wrist) and in the upper stock inlet. All of the visible serial numbers match. The buttplate and stock screws are correctly not serial numbered. "1133" is stamped on the right side of the stock; the significance of this number is not known.
Good. The rifle has been rechambered to center fire, period retailer refinished and has a period replacement magazine follower and modern rear sight leaf. The barrel, magazine, hammer, magazine follower and trigger have a high polish blue finish and the receiver and buttplate have been silver plated. The barrel edges are sharp and the New Haven Arms legend and serial number are crisp. Some light pitting is visible underneath the high polish blue finish. The receiver and buttplate are in very good overall condition and retain about 20% of the silver-plated finish in protected areas. The case colors on the lever have aged to a gray-brown patina. The stock has been re-varnished and is good condition with a hair-line crack in the left wrist and some chipping along the left edge of the upper tang. This is a good example of a rare late production Henry rifle with Model 1866 Winchester style round receiver profile serial numbered in the Model 1866 Winchester serial number range.
