This factory engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1910. This rifle is pictured on page 343 of "Winchester Engraving" by RL Wilson, and identifies the uncommon engraving pattern of a standing bear and running doe on the left and the elk on the right. The rifle has Winchester No. 9 factory engraving on the receiver, forearm tip, and barrel breech. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with Style H checkering and a piano finish. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co." The barrel has a Lyman 37W front sight with a colored bead and no ramp and a buckhorn sporting style rear sight. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a blue octagon barrel and full length magazine, forearm cap, receiver, and crescent buttplate. The hammer and lever are casehardened. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21 1894." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38-55" is marked on the left barrel flat surrounded by an engraved double-line border. The oval Winchester "WP" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver surrounded by engraving. The serial number, "565676" is stamped across the underside of the receiver.
Very fine. The rifle retains 80% plus of the original blue finish. The barrel and magazine have most of the blue finish remaining with the exception of some wear on the barrel edges and the normal takedown marks on the magazine and magazine band. The blue finish is thin on the forearm cap, take-down collar and receiver contact points. The blue finish on the buttplate has faded to a blue/gray patina. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded to a smooth silver-gray patina. The detailed scroll and border engraving and game scenes are sharp. The oil finish highly figured fancy grade stock and forearm are both very good. The checkering shows moderate handling wear and the bottom and left side of the stock have some scattered minor handling marks. This is a fine example of a desirable factory engraved Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle formerly in the Arlin McCroskie Collection.
