This is an example of a Winchester Model 1866 Rifle that was manufactured in 1877. The rifle has a full octagon barrel. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860.". The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Dovetailed blade front sight and adjustable rear buckhorn sporting sight. The barrel, magazine tube and loading gate were finished blue, and the receiver, forend cap and buttplate are brass. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
Fair. The refinished metal surfaces have patches of finish applied mixed with a smooth mottled brown patina. There is a small dent and several small dings on the left side of the magazine tube. The brass components have an artificially aged patina with repair evident on right side of frame. Some of the receiver screw heads show some marring. The wood is also fair with some minor splinters absent and minor chipping along the upper edges of the forearm. The stock shows a few minor chips around the tangs, and overall some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
