Manufactured in 1894, this Model 1886 rifle is fitted with a special order round heavy barrel and chambered in the desirable 45-70 caliber. (Factory letter states 45-90, but this clearly is an original 45-70!). The rifle is also equipped with a special order double set trigger and shotgun butt. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address with "45-70" at the breech. Directly behind the trigger is marked with the two-line/two-patent dates and the serial number is at the end of the tang. The upper tang is fitted with a Marble's short range peep sight. Dovetailed blade front and adjustable folding ladder rear sights. Blue barrel and full length magazine and casehardened remaining parts. Mounted with a special order checkered walnut forearm with steel forend cap and pistol grip stock with a ebony grip insert and checkered hard rubber Winchester shotgun buttplate. Winchester discontinued the casehardened receiver on Model 1886s in 1901. The accompanying factory letter states that the serial number was applied on May 8, 1894 and verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, round extra heavy barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, rubber plate on the shotgun butt, and that it was received in and shipped out to order number 4625 on March 11, 1897.
Fine. The barrel retains 60% original blue finish with smooth thinning to a smooth gray patina, a few very small dents and some scattered minor scratches. The magazine tube retains 30% original thin blue finish, mainly in protected areas, with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The receiver retains traces of faded original case colors mixed with a smooth silver gray patina. Much of the original case colors remain on the hammer, and the lever has a smooth mottled gray patina with strong bright original case colors in protected areas. The wood is fine with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
