Description:

This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle. The rifle has a 24-inch round light weight barrel with full length magazine and is fitted with the Lyman Hunting front sight and shotgun buttplate that were standard on Model 1886 rifles chambered for the .33 W.C.F. cartridge. In addition to the Lyman Hunting front sight, the rifle has a Lyman folding combination rear sight mounted on the receiver tang and standard buckhorn, sporting style rear sight on the barrel. The rifle has a straight grain, American walnut, stock and forearm. The stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber shotgun buttplate embossed with the oval "Winchester Repeating Arms " logo. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver are blue and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "33 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and has the serial number, "117797" stamped in script numerals behind the rear trigger guard screw.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 50% of the original blue and color casehardened finish overall. Most of the blue finish is present of the barrel and magazine while the barrel band and forearm cap show handling wear. The barrel legend and caliber markings are sharp. The blue finish on the receiver is thin on the bottom edges and lower tang and has faded to a silver gray patina. The top and sides of the receiver retain most of the blue finish with some light scratches and handling marks. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a silver-gray patina. The stock and forearm are in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The hard rubber buttplate has very minor handling marks. This is a solid representative example of a Winchester Model 1886 .33 W.C.F. Lever Action Rifle.
