Description:

Winchester Model 1876 rifle manufactured in 1883. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The rifle has a 28-inch full octagon barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a Beach style folding combination front sight and a buckhorn, sporting style rear sight. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The rifle is custom engraved with well executed scroll work and borders. The engraving covers the barrel, muzzle and breech, barrel band, forearm cap, top sides and bottom of the receiver, dust cover, upper tang and buttplate heel. There are two, large, open panels on either side of the receiver. The engraving is well-executed and period. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 40-60" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver surrounded by an engraved border. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886" with foliate devices at either end. The upper tang has been drilled and tapped, and part of the marking has been obliterated. The caliber designation "40-60" is engraved in script on the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number "53728" is stamped in script on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Rating Definition:

Good as period embellished. The rifle has a mottled brown patina overall. The factory markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in good overall condition. The wood has numerous minor scratches and handling marks and has been lightly sanded and re-varnished. This is a good looking example of a scarce and desirable Winchester Model 1876 rifle with well-executed period engraving.
