Description:

Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine that was manufactured in 1904. The carbine has a 20-inch round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a block front sight base fitted with a Lyman "Jack Sight" blade with brass bead and a standard folding leaf rear sight graduated from 200-900 yards. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The hammer has the second pattern impressed knurling with curved base. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The stock has the standard carbine style buttplate. The barrel is roll-stamped with the third style legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." located between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber designation "38 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the second style designation: "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number "257927" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, bolt, trigger and buttplate have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The loading gate is fire blue. The hammer and loading lever are casehardened with muted case colors. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with the standard Winchester oil finish. The included factory letter confirms carbine configuration and caliber. It was received in warehouse on August 3, 1904, and shipped on August 6, 1904.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and magazine have 90% plus of the original blue finish. The barrel legend and caliber designation are crisp. The upper and lower barrel bands have about 90% of the finish with some light scuff marks on the sides of the bands. The blue on the receiver shows light handling wear with thin finish on the contact points on the bottom and right side and a few scattered scratches. The left side of the receiver has the typical light scuff marks from contact with the saddle ring. The receiver retains 85% of the blue finish. Nearly all of the blue is present on the bolt. The loading gate has more than 90% of the fire blue finish intact. The buttplate retains about 75% of the original blue with some surface rust on the heel. The stock and forearm remain in excellent condition with close to 95% of the original oil finish; wear is limited to a few scattered storage marks. This is a very fine example of a highly desirable Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine.
