Description:

This 2 1/8 by 3 3/8 inch image depicts a bearded soldier holding his cap in one hand, a rifle-musket with affixed bayonet in his other, and a Volcanic pistol tucked into his belt. There is a modern sheet on the back of the portrait that identifies him as "(2ND LT & THEN CAPT.)/CARLOS CARR/BRANDON, VT./1ST REG. CO. 'G' VT. VOLS/4TH INFANTRY." Carr served with the 4th Vermont Infantry from September 1861 until May 1865 in companies A, C, E, and F. He was captured at Weldon Railroad on June 23, 1864, just three days after being promoted to 1st lieutenant of Company F and was held as a prisoner of war at Macon, Georgia, until he was paroled on March 1, 1865. The 4th Vermont Infantry fought at many significant battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. The consignor confirmed that a carte de visite of Carr in another private collection matches the man in this portrait. The case is marked "GENUINE/UNION CASE,/IMPROVED./Fine Gilt and Burnished/Hinge./S. PECK & CO.,/MANUFACTURERS," under the portrait. Civil War portraits have long been collectible. Those depicting armed men are especially sought out, and those with men carrying rare firearms are even more desirable. Additionally, this is very likely the only identified image of a soldier with a Volcanic pistol.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with mild storage wear and some slight chips in the case. This piece would be an excellent addition to a Civil War collection and perfect for display alongside a Volcanic pistol.
