Offered here is a stunning masterpiece of contemporary firearm art. This engraved and gold inlaid S&W Model 629 revolver was originally sold at a sealed bid auction held at the National Sporting Goods Association trade show in Chicago with the entire wining bid of $80,000 presented to the U.S. Olympic Committee to support the American shooting team at the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow. Unfortunately for the American team, the United States was one of 65 countries which boycotted the 1980 games because of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The revolver is profusely engraved with fine S&W scrollwork and 24 karat gold inlaid lines and borders. The right side plate features a stunning large relief gold inlaid man v. bear frontier scene. This scene was modeled from Dan Smith's 1902 painting "The Last Cartridge." The S&W markings are in gold. The left side of the frame features an engraved "1st" among the scrollwork and contrasting gold inlaid S&W monogram. The grips feature 24 karat gold S&W medallions and scrimshaw floral scroll motifs above a series of banners. The banners on the right panel read "S&W/FIRST .44 SS MAG/1979," while the banners on the left panel are blank. The bottoms of the grips feature scroll engraved gold butt caps. The back of both grip panels are signed "12/SN/A.J.E/INDIA." The inscription on the right grip panel and engraved "1st" on the frame reference the Model 629 as being the first stainless steel S&W revolver in .44 Magnum. The scrollwork was performed by S&W's Paul Piquette, the gold inlaid side plate and scene was done by S&W's Domingos Joaquim, and the grips were done by S&W's Russ Smith. Comes with a S&W box which is numbered to the gun, a framed (12x17 3/4 inches) photograph of the revolver with the included "Last Cartridge" sterling silver plaque (numbered to gun) and special presentation mahogany case adorned with gold plated brass corners and edging. The exterior of the case lid has a plaque which reads, "Smith & Wesson/1st Model 629 .44 Magnum/February 1979."

Excellent overall. The cylinder shows some discoloration mixed with slight pitting which does not distract from the overall attractiveness of the revolver. Mechanically excellent. The box is excellent. The case is fine showing moderate high edge wear on the lining and some minor handling/storage marks on the exterior.
