Description:

The exact maker of these carbines is unknown, but Schuyler, Hartley & Graham served as William Mont Storm's agents for the production and sale of these weapons during the Civil War. Only 500 were manufactured through a 2,000 gun contract ordered through the Ordnance Dept. by the State of Indiana, and those carbines were refused by the Ordnance Department and likely sold off through Schuyler, Hartley & Graham to unknown parties. The carbine has a standard military style blade front sight, notch and folding leaf rear sight, "W. MONT STORMS/PATENT JULY 1856" marked breechblock, no additional markings, a saddle ring and bar on the left, and a sling swivel on the barrel band. Many of the components are very English in design suggesting these may have been manufactured abroad.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 80% plus of the period Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham retailer applied nickel plating, spots of brown patina, mild pitting showing under the finish, sanded and re-oiled stock with some scrapes and pressure marks, and general minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. Writer cannot recall another one of these being in our auction!
