Description:

Manufactured post-war, this is an example of an 1896 Broomhandle pistol with a full length receiver and a "bolo" profile frame. Pinned-base blade front sight and 1000-meter tangent rear sights, with a knurled ring at the rear of the barrel, "crown/crown/U" and the three-line Mauser address on the chamber, and a "Germany" export mark on the left side of the frame. Fitted with a "NS" marked small ring hammer, niter blue safety, matching numbered 22-groove grips and an unnumbered standard sized shoulder stock. Page 134 of The Broomhandle Pistol 1896-1936 by Erikson and Pate states "In the 445,000 to 448,000 range, a small grouping of long barrel Bolos are encountered. Surplus 5.5 inch tapered barrels were welded to existing extensions and exported, as most are stamped Germany". This best describes this example, serial number 446,571, right in the middle of the aforementioned serial range.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing a mixed patina, stock wear and spotting on the barrel, some light spotting on the frame, high edge wear, and handling marks. Strong niter blue is present on the left side of the safety, the right showing a mixed gray color. The grips are very good, with a few mild dings, and the stock is good with mild scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent.
