This 10 1/4 x 23 3/4 inch print is lightly period tinted with water colors and is marked "Spotted Eagles Hostile Sioux Village Tongue River M.T. Nov. 1879" in black on the lower left and with the "L.A. Huffman." copyright in black on the lower right. Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) arrived in Miles City, Montana Territory, in 1879 and took the job of post photographer at Fort Keogh, making this one of his earlier photographs. The print is in a 18 x 30 3/4 inch frame with thick, wide off-white matting, and the paper backing hand marked "D. Koster". Provenance: The John Fox Collection
Very fine, showing a couple small age cracks on the image, a small stain on the matting, and scattered minor marks on the frame. A poignant image evoking the changing of the seasons in nature as well as in a way of life.
