This attractive 18th century German jaeger rifle has a brass barrel with deep seven-groove rifling, circle designs on the muzzle, a dovetailed brass blade front sight, polished iron rear sight with folding leaf and sculpted scroll finial, "A FRANCKFVRT" signed on top, and scroll and floral engraving along with a boar head design engraved on the breech section along with coordinating designs on the iron tang. The lock is also brass and is signed "M. GERLACH" under the frizzen and has scroll engraving. It is fired using adjustable double set triggers. The furniture is engraved with scroll and floral patterns along with various other motifs, including a stag on the trigger guard bow, mask designs and a female bust on the pierced side plate, and a classical male bust and martial trophies on the buttplate. The stock has fine molding and floral and scroll carving in raised relief that extends onto the wood patch box lid. The carving around the broad cheek rest is particularly intricate.
Very good with attractive aged patina and generally crisp engraving on the brass throughout, repaired pan and lock internals, silver-gray patina on the iron, and general mild wear overall. The stock is also fine and has mostly crisp carving, some attractive grain, a gap at the forend cap, chips including at the nose of the lock, a partially repaired break in the forend, and some splits and repairs in the grain on the butt. The lock functions but needs work as it does not hold at full cock.
