This outstanding Lever Action Navy Pistol was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company c. 1856. This pistol has an 8-inch octagon barrel with integral 10-shot magazine, brass receiver, distinctive loading lever with finger hole and flared walnut grips. The barrel/magazine is blued, the brass receiver is gold plated, the hammer and trigger are color case-hardened, the bolt, rear sight and loading lever are niter blue and the grips have a varnished piano finish. The Type I, ribbed, barrel has a rounded T-bar spring, silver cone front sight and brass magazine follower. The receiver has a fixed, dove-tail mounted, rear sight, semi-circular cut-out at the rear of the ejection port and bolt with single hook extractor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB.14.1854" in three lines. The serial number "1689" is located on the right side of the loading lever, right side of the butt beneath the grip and stamped on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly mark "1" is stamped on the left side of the lever and on the left side of the butt beneath the grip. The Volcanic Arms Company manufactured an estimated 1500 Lever Action Navy Pistols with 8-inch barrels between 1855 and 1857. Provenance: The Mac McCroskie Collection
Excellent. This rare Volcanic Navy pistol is all original and retains 95% of the high polish blue on the barrel/magazine - wear is limited to a small area of finish loss on the right flat near the muzzle and traces of edge wear. The Volcanic legend on the top barrel flat is extremely sharp. Traces of the delicate gold plated finish are present on the right side of the receiver, right side plate and beneath the grips. The balance of the receiver has a handsome, untouched, patina. The receiver and grip screws are in near perfect condition. The bolt and cartridge elevator have 50% of the fiery niter blue finish. Significant amounts of delicate niter blue remain on the loading lever and trigger. The flared walnut grips are in excellent condition with numerous shallow dings visible on the butt. The grips have 95% of the original piano finish varnish. This is an exceptional example of a scarce and highly desirable Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol that would be difficult to improve upon.
